I have attended BrailleBeats every summer since 2008, and each Intensive has taught me something new.

From working with different art media, to learning new Orientation and Mobility Skills, to playing a new instrument for the first time, I have always left for home with more information than I had before. I have made some of my best friends at Braille Beats, and any one of them would fervently correct anyone who were to accidentally refer to Braille Beats as a "camp". It is much more than a camp; it is an "Intensive!"

Looking back on the musical aspects of the program, I can say that it has definitely helped me to expand my musical knowledge and aided in my progress. When I first came to the program I did not know much of the braille music code, and was not participating as much as I could in band. Daily instruction in ear training, keyboarding, theory, and the braille music code, has helped me to build confidence in my skills as a musician and taught me new ways to access musical material. The ear training, theory, and music history components of the program, have also served as an introduction to collegiate music academia for me. When I began college as a music major in the 2012-2013 school year, I had a good grasp on the theory taught throughout the year, prior experience in dictation and sight singing, and was able to pass out of keyboarding classes because of the practice I gained at Braille Beats. Study of various composers and periods of music has also helped me in music history, which I am taking this year. I loved how I was able to take the skills learned at Braille Beats home with me and apply them in my classes throughout high school and college.

Braille Beats is a program for the hobbiest and serious music student alike. Every student in the program receives the attention they need to build their skills, and no one leaves without learning something new. The students work hard to perform well together, but we also have a lot of fun too. Our enthusiasm for the program is evident year-round. Each Spring I start to get excited for the summer, and can't wait to see what the Braille Beats staff has in store for us. I would highly recommend it to anyone who has an interest in music; it's very beneficial, and always is a blast!
